- Dr. Wiesenfeld began private practice in our community in 1979 at Internist PC.
- Dr. Gesme started in 1982 at Medical Associates. In 1983 they joined practices to start what is now Oncology Associates. Original office was at 1030 5th Ave. S.E.
- Dr. Wright joined the practice in 1985. Together they bring to the community a medical group specializing in the care of Oncology patients and Hematology (Disease of the blood).
- In 1987 they moved into their new facility at 788 8th Ave. SE
- The association also allowed the development of a broad range of research treatment programs for cancer patients providing access to Clinical Research Trials to patients in Eastern Iowa. Patients who are eligible no longer have to travel to major cancer centers to receive the newest cancer drugs and treatment. In 1990, Cedar Rapids Oncology Project began receiving Grant funding from the US Department of Health and Human Services through the National Cancer Institute. There are only 50 such grants sponsored each year. They have continued to participate in clinical trials to this day, providing access for our patients to the newest medications and therapies.
- In January of 1993 the practice moved into our current location at 525 10th St. SE.
- We added an in-house pharmacy in 1995. Our pharmacist is specially trained in the mixing and administration of a broad range of chemotherapy and hematological agents. She provides teaching for our patients and staff. She is an excellent resource for information in the newest medical therapies and take home prescriptions.
- Dr. Leila Kutteh joined the practice in 1999 and brought a new dimension as a female physician. She brings experience in Hematology, Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant to the practice.
- Michele Jones-Mcleod, RN, MSN, ARNP began working as our Advanced Practice Nurse in March of 2002. With her experience and training she has been providing the same quality of care and compassion that our physicians bring to the practice.
- Dr. Abby Thrower joined us in August of 2002 and brings Hematology and Oncology experience as well. .
- We have an excellent staff of Nurses most of whom have already received their Oncology Certification. They are an integral part of our medical team.
- We also have our own laboratory with specialized Medical Technologists and continue to update and add state of the art equipment to provide for convenient laboratory testing for our patients.
- An added resource for our patients and family members since October of 1993 for psychology is Dr. Susan Enzle, PhD.
- Over the past 20 years we have added outreach clinics in Anamosa, Manchester, Vinton and Independence to better serve rural Eastern Iowa. The staff has also grown from the original 10 people to staff of 51 people. The founding goals of the practice, to provide the most advanced care to those with cancer and blood disorders in Eastern Iowa, remain true today.
- Dr. Gesme relocated to Minnesota on June 1, 2006.
- Deb Wilbur joined practice on July 1, 2006 and Ruth McGowan joined practice on August 1, 2006.
